Accommodation
There are limited options within walking distance (e.g. https://maps.app.goo.gl/6f7Ak25uuhjiizk36 ) but there are many hotels South, around e.g. Sanjo Keihan (3km away), Kyoto station (6.5 km away), and between these two neighborhoods.
From Kyoto station, you can walk 10 min east to Keihan Shichijo, ride north to Demachiyanagi, and walk to Yukawa institute.

Okazaki Park area (direct access to Yukawa Insitute via 5, 203, 204 bus), is near Heian Jingu Shrine, and close to the main art museum and performing arts precinct. It may be a good halfway point between Yukawa insitute and downtown / Kyoto station.
There are also several options near Nijo castle (west of the city) but your commute will require several bus / train transfers.
You can find many hotels on websites such as booking . com or agoda.
*We recommend hotels, guest houses and hostels with front desks where possible, especially if you are planning to check in late at night. This is because some accomodations are self check in (key left in a lock or post box, and require you to fill a form online with passport information as per Japanese law before receiving the code etc). In case you book somewhere with self check in (no front desk), please double check in advance the check in instructions.
Public transport
Kyoto has several private bus and metro train companies. It is most convenient to arrange an "IC card" (such as ICOCA, Suica) to pay all bus/train/subway fares to get around Kyoto with public transport.
Depending on the make / model of your phone, you may be able to add an electronic IC card (Suica or ICOCA) to Apple wallet or google pay. (more information TBC)
Otherwise you will need to purchase each fare by with cash,
or
You can also buy a physical IC card (ICOCA, Suica etc.) in advance at major train stations such as Kyoto station, Kansai airport station. But note that the machines to dispense the plastic IC cards sometimes only accept CASH.
Taxis
Kyoto station to the Yukawa Institute will cost around ¥3000. There are several taxi ranks at exits of the station.
If you will ride taxis often, it will be handy to carry a print out of your hotel name / address (with post code 60x-xxxx), or have it saved in notes of your phone.
If you prefer to order taxis (like Uber), you can download the "GO!" taxi app.

There are both electronic and mechanical bicycle rental services around Kyoto (e.g. "LUUP") which can be accessed via phone app. Accomodations may also have bicycles for rent.
