Kyoto Workshop on Stochastic Thermodynamics and Quantum Information 2027|STQI2027

Scope

In recent years, stochastic thermodynamics has been developing at a remarkable pace. Although its theoretical foundation was originally established in classical systems, the framework is now rapidly expanding into the quantum domain. Combined with other efforts to connect quantum information and thermodynamics—such as the extension of thermodynamics through resource-theoretic approaches—this trend provides strong motivation for introducing quantum-information perspectives into the study of nonequilibrium phenomena, thereby creating a powerful interface between nonequilibrium statistical physics and quantum information theory.

Despite being in its infancy, this emerging area is already attracting considerable interest. As quantum-information-based ideas are brought into nonequilibrium physics, our understanding of quantum advantages—originally formulated in contexts such as communication and computation—is beginning to extend rapidly into energy-related applications, including the performance limits of engines, refrigerators, and other thermodynamic devices. Conversely, cutting-edge developments in stochastic thermodynamics, such as optimal-transport-based formulations of thermodynamic evolution and analyses of stochastic processes dominated by non-Markovian effects, are expected to provide powerful new tools for both the theoretical and experimental study of quantum information. This workshop aims to bring together leading researchers in quantum information and stochastic thermodynamics, fostering interactions between theory and experiment and accelerating progress in this new interdisciplinary field.
